1927 Mississippi Flood Essay In one of most powerful natural disasters in the 1900s, the Mississippi river flooded which caused severe damage around the states of Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. The flood was caused during a large rainfall that lasted approximately 18 hours; the rainfall caused an overflow in the Mississippi river that overtook the banks. This flood wreaked havoc amongst the citizens in its path. The disaster caused over 400 million dollars’ worth of damage and 246 deaths. Back in 1927 new papers from every major city had stories all this over national disaster, like the Chicago Daily Tribune and the New York Times. Which both had very similar editorial stances, they both wrote about the political aspect of the major issue. Coverage of the government and how the intend to contribution to help this horrible situation at hand. In the Chicago Daily Tribune, they ran a headline stating,†200. 00 need help—Hoover. † Hoover, at the time was Secretary of Commerce was urging President Coolidge that a larger relief fund was needed. (Chicago Daily Tribune). The newspaper went on to discuss donations from the community to help aid the 200,000 people that needed help. Hoover collaborated with the Red Cross to relieve the people affected by the flood. The editorial stance that the Chicago Daily Tribune ran was political. In the New York Times, their headline was, â€Å"Congress to act on flood perils. The paper ran an article about Tennessee Senator McKellar taking action on the Mississippi flood issue. He states that, â€Å"The cost may stagger the economic imagination of some of my colleagues, but no matter what it is it will not be a fraction of the loss that has followed in the wake of the record-breaking deluge of 1927. I intend to call a conference of the Senators and Representatives of the Mississippi States to make a survey and, if possible, to draft legislation which will minimize the flood peril. † (New York Times).

The Hardy-Weinberg theorem states that the frequency of alleles and genotypes in a population’s gene pool remain constant over the generations unless acted upon by agents other than sexual recombination. For example, take a population of mice that consists of 1,000 members. But what exactly is needed to create Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium? (Basically, a population in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium s not evolving in any way.) Five specific factors are needed to create Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium within a population- a very large population, isolation from other populations, no net mutations, random mating, and no natural selection. The first element needed to create Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium is a very large population size. The larger the population, the less likely it is for genetic drift to occur. Genetic drift is a chance fluctuation in the gene pool that may change the frequencies of alleles. A large population can better represent the gene pool of the previous generation than a small one. In order to completely eliminate all chances of genetic drift, a population would have to be infinitely large. Thus, we can see here that perfect Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, which has no changes in the frequency of alleles, would require no genetic drift at all, and genetic drift itself is only possible in a population of infinite size. There are two types of genetic drift- the bottleneck effect and the founder effect. Both severely decrease the variability within a population, altering the frequencies of alleles and thus making Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium impossible. If a disaster occurs in a population, killing off many members, the surviving members will not be representative of the original population. Atlantis

Atlantis is the subject of a legend about an advanced island civilization that was destroyed or lost. I believe Atantis is located in Bolivia based on historical evidence, advanaced architecture, advanced adimttance to road systems, and clues found in the text Critias written by the ancient Greek philospher Plato. The historical evidence in Bolivia and Atalantis match up because both civilizations were wealth, and had advanced architectual buildings. â€Å"There is historical evidence they usesd advances architectural and agricultural techniques†¦ (http://boliviabella. com/history. html). In Critias:†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ they had such an amount of wealth†¦ and they were furnished with everything which they needed,both in the city and country†(paragraph 14). Having a great amount of wealth means the city was ran under a ruler that controlled the city, which had advanced more then other civilizations due to the amount of control the ruler had. The wealth of Atantis and Bolivia are a factor to its architecture. Both civilizations had similar advanced architecture from the materials the building were built from. In Critias:†All the outside of the temple, with the exception of the pinnacles, they covered with silver, and the pinnacles with gold†(paragraph 16). â€Å"Modern satellite mapping shows the plain, now called the Altiplano to be of rectangular configuration, perfectly level, enclosed on all sides by mountains and these mountains contained the metals which Plato told us about, namely gold, silver, copper, tin and the mysterious Orichalcum† (an alloy of gold and copper which occurs only in the Andes) and which Plato said were used to plate the walls of the circular city. The words â€Å"Atl† and â€Å"Antis† are themselves of native America origins meaning â€Å"water† and â€Å"copper† respectively and the plain is subject to earthquakes and floods such as Plato said sank the city in a single day and night of rainfall†(http://www. atlantisbolivia. org/atlantisboliviapart1. htm). The two qoutes show that both had acces to the same materials that were used for various reasons like architecture. The civilaztion was so advanced that they had a road stystem and other things we use today like bridges. â€Å"They created a system of roads,aqueducts and hanging bridges, some of which still exist today†(http://www. oliviabella. com/history. html). In Critias:†First of all they bridged over the zones of sea which surrounded the ancient metropolis, making a road to and from the royal palace†(paragraph 15). This qoute proves that Atlantis had bridges and roads which Bolivia also had early on in their civilazation. In conclusion, I believe that Atlantis is located in Bolivia based on historical evidence, advanced architecture, and advanced admittance to road systems. Clues provided by Plato in Critias his historical account of Atlantis were also found in Bolivia, that helped me lead to the conclusion that Bolivia is where Atlantis existed.
